Tisha B’Av marks the destruction of our Temples (1st by the Babylonians in 586 BCE and the 2nd in 70 CE by the Romans) and many subsequent exiles, persecutions and tragedies.
It is our ‘National Day of Mourning’ and is observed by fasting approximately 25 hours from sunset to sunset. (The only time other than Yom Kippur where we fast from sunset to sunset).
We therefore observe customs that are normally associated with mourning i.e. sitting on low chairs in Synagogue, removing leather shoes, no haircuts, shaving etc. as on this day we are all considered mourners.
Monday 15th July
Fast Commences at 9.11 pm
Evening Service followed by Megillat Eichah at 9.15 pm
Tuesday 16th July
Morning Service at 7.00 am
Afternoon Service at 1.45 pm
Evening Service at 9.30 pm
Fast concludes at 10.06 pm
