Belarus: Photography and Memory

In 2005, Jeannette, together with some family members, visited Baranovichy, her parents’ birth place in Belarus. Jeannette‘s parents married and left for England in 1932, never to return and never to see most of their families again. Her mother’s house, amazingly, had survived the War.

Charting the story, and creating a book using old family photographs and photographs taken in 2005, enabled Jeannette to re-examine the childhood stories told to her about her parents’ histories. She later showed the completed book to Holocaust Survivor, the late Jack Kagan, who told her how one of her uncles died in a Labour Camp, the grizzly remains of which Jeannette had visited in 2005. Producing the book transformed the loss of so many family members into a poignant and more available experience.

Rabbi Marcus will discuss the history of Jews of Belarus, with particular emphasis on the Yeshivot and the part they played in the Jewish life of the Shtetl.
