The London launch for ‘Shtetl Love Song’ will feature music and readings and a talk by Sergey Kanovich, the author’s son, who runs an award-winning NGO ‘Lost Shtetl’ in Lithuania.

Special guest performance by Lukas Geniušas, silver medallist 2010 Chopin Piano Competition and 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition.

Steven Leas will open the concert and Yiddish songs will be woven into the programme to recreate a flavour of the Lithuanian shtetl featuring Arjan Byron – Soprano, Stefan Byron – Piano, Yoav Oved – Tenor and Ilan Lazarus – piano.

Shtetl Love Song is Grigory Kanovich’s moving autobiographical novel about growing up in a small Lithuanian town before the Second World War. It is a love song and a requiem to the shtetl and the rich community that lived there; the cobbler, the tailor, the shop-owners and Socialist dreamers, the beggars and braggarts.

Grigory Kanovich is one of Lithuania’s most prominent writers, winner of Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts for 2014. His novels have been translated into more than thirteen languages. In 2018 a play based on Kanovich’s novels, Smile Upon Us Lord will be on at London’s Barbican theatre featuring an all-star Russian cast.
