Tour of the Cricket and the Jewish Community Exhibition at the MCC Museum

On Monday, 24 July 2023 some 25 members and friends of Central Synagogue were given a private tour of the new cricket exhibition in the MCC Museum at Lord ‘s Cricket Ground entitled “Cricket and the Jewish Community“.

The tour was led by Neil Robinson, Head of Heritage and Collections at the MCC. He took the group through the various exhibits at great length, explaining the history of the Jewish involvement in cricket , both in the UK and overseas , particularly in South Africa . He also talked about the intention to hold similar exhibitions for other minority groups.

Interestingly , two of the attendees were Central Synagogue Chairman Mervyn Druian and member Dr Phillip Gishen, both of whom were in the same class at school in Johannesburg as Dr Ali Bacher, the famous former South African cricket captain and administrator.

Rabbi Barry Lerer of Central said “this was an excellent and moving exhibition demonstrating the commitment of Jewish people and communities the world over to both cricket and to sport generally. It was fascinating to see the role in cricket played by the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, then Chief Rabbi of Ireland“.

Mervyn Druian, Chairman of Central Synagogue, said “What a thoroughly invigorating exhibition which brought back so many fond memories of my life and sporting heroes in Johannesburg and confirming the commitment of the South African Jewish community to the sport of cricket“.

Jonathan Metliss, Central Synagogue Council member and Board of Deputies representative who organised the tour said “I was so pleased to introduce my fellow synagogue members to the exhibition and, in particular,  to see the section on anti-semitism in cricket which is an area which must never be forgotten nor abandoned“.

Central Synagogue has embarked on an active programme of cultural events on topics of Jewish interest in its “ Talks of Interest” and “ Kiddush Talks “ programme.
