Central Synagogue Visit to the British Library to view ancient Jewish Manuscripts

On Tuesday 25 July , 2023 some 25 members and friends of Central Synagogue led by Rabbi Barry Lerer visited the British Library to view and hear a lecture on a display of ancient Jewish manuscripts, predominantly medieval

The British Library collection of Hebrew manuscripts is one of the world’s most important collections of Hebrew manuscripts , of which at least 300 have some decoration 

The lecture and explanation were given by curator Hannah Gentili , a member of the British Library Hebrew Manuscripts team . Manuscripts on display included the Brescia Pentateuch ( 1492) , the Maimonides Mishnah Torah ( 1490) , Maimonides Guide to the Perpexed ( 15 Century ) the Nahmanides Commentary on the Pentateuch ( 1491) and the Pentateuch in Yiddish ( 16th century )
 
Rabbi Barry Lerer said ” this was a most illuminating and educative experience and demonstrated strongly the power of the book in Jewish history , customs and religion“
