CENTRAL MARCHES AT AND REMEMBERS AJEX ANNUAL REMEMBRANCE WEEKEND
On Shabbat 18 November 2023, Central Synagogue hosted Petty Officer Abigail Sondack of the Royal Navy at a Synagogue Kiddush Talk. She spoke at length about her activities in the Royal Navy, more especially as an aircraft engineering technician.
As well as talking about the Jewish contribution to the British armed forces, both past and present, and some history on AJEX , she also commented on her experiences as a Jewish member of the Royal Navy and how she handled that, and her work in the diversity and inclusivity areas.
Petty Officer Sondack was formally introduced by Council member Jonathan Metliss and a vote of thanks was given by Rabbi Barry Lerer.
Her presence at Central coincided with the display and inauguration of two new flags, the Israel flag and the Union Jack, on either side of the synagogue ark.
On Remembrance Day itself, 19 November, the largest ever Central Synagogue contingent joined the AJEX parade at the Cenotaph in honouring and remembering the thousands of Jewish servicemen and women who fought and served in the British Armed forces.
Chairman of Central Synagogue Mervyn Druian said “ this was a special weekend for Central Synagogue and I am proud of the community’s commitment to AJEX and its values “
Rabbi Barry Lerer added “ I am delighted at Central’s contribution to the AJEX Remembrance Day activities and compliment those of all ages who marched at the Parade, proudly representing the Synagogue”
Central Synagogue has embarked on an active programme of cultural events of Jewish content in its Talks of Interest and Kiddush Talks series.
