Busy Central Synagogue Before Rosh Hashanah
In the lead up to Rosh Hashanah, Central Synagogue has been busy and active, writes Council member Jonathan Metliss.
In conjunction with Western Marble Arch Synagogue, Central Synagogue co-hosted a first night Choral Selichot service at Western Marble Arch Synagogue, Wallenberg Place, on Saturday 9th September. The two chazanim were Steven Leas of Central and Simon Cohen, who uplifted the congregation with their wonderful singing and traditional melodies, which uplifted the congregation, supported by members of the Central Synagogue choir.
Inspiring addresses were given by Rabbi Barry Lerer of Central and Rabbi Daniel Epstein of Western Marble Arch, to an audience of some one hundred and fifty members and visitors, including Michael Goldstein, President of the United Synagogue.
On Monday 11th September, Central Synagogue hosted a special Pre-Rosh Hashanah Tea Party attended by some thirty members and guests. Chazan Steven Leas entertained the audience with some traditional and favourite High Holiday tunes.
Rabbi Lerer of Central Synagogue said, ‘I am delighted that the Synagogue is so active with its social activities and the Selichot service was truly magnificent, with Chazan Steven Leas in superb form’.
Mervyn Druian, Chairman of Central Synagogue, added, ‘likewise, I am very happy to see this level of activity at the Synagogue, and that our members thoroughly enjoyed these two events in the build up to Rosh Hashanah, which we are all looking forward to’.
