Rabbi Marcus – Bereshit

 

Bereshit opens with the familiar words ‘Bereshit bara Elokim’ –  ‘In the beginning the Almighty created ‘- expressing one of the most basic and important of all the teachings of Judaism namely that there is a G-d and that he is the creator of all life. We read of the process of creation – light, sky, land, heavenly constellations, fish, birds, animals and finally Adam and Chava (Eve) who were placed in GAN EDEN – the Garden of Eden where all types of trees bearing the most delicious of fruit grew.  Adam and Chava were allowed to eat from all except one and unhappily the temptation was too great and they ate from the forbidden fruit resulting in their being banished from the Garden of Eden.
